Symptoms
A battery-electric sedan came into the shop. The owner reported that the air conditioning was not cooling, and that compressor noise was louder than usual.
Diagnostic Process
Step one: check system pressures with a manifold gauge set and confirm there is no refrigerant leak and that pressures are basically normal. Step two: scan the whole vehicle and find a fault code on the compressor side indicating excessive load. Combined with the noise, the compressor itself was the initial suspect, but replacing it did not cure the fault. Step three: move on to the control chain. Reading live data from the integrated body controller showed the electronic expansion valve on the evaporator side stuck at its limit position and not moving, in an over-open and uncontrolled state. Coil resistance of that valve measured within specification, and when an opening command was sent manually the data stream showed the controller outputting the correct signal, yet the valve did not actually move. Replacing the evaporator electronic expansion valve finally resolved the fault completely.
What This Case Teaches
The lesson here is that correct resistance does not prove a component is working. When diagnosing actuators such as electronic expansion valves, you must confirm two things beyond coil resistance: whether the controller actually commanded the action, and whether the actuator actually moved once it received the command. A compressor excessive-load code can also be a symptom of an abnormal metering component downstream. Working through pressure testing, then data-stream analysis, then actuator verification is what prevents misdiagnosis and unnecessary parts replacement.
Conclusion
Together these eight articles cover the structure and working principle of electric compressors, technical highlights, intelligent thermal control, hands-on compressor oil work, causes of burn-out, typical fault diagnosis, staged troubleshooting and a real repair case, forming a complete knowledge chain from understanding the principle through routine maintenance and fault diagnosis to hands-on repair.
