The Overlooked Compressor Oil
A large share of the problems seen in the workshop are down not to low refrigerant charge but to the condition of the compressor oil. Many technicians check only whether the charge is right and the pressures are normal, overlooking the oil inside the compressor. Oil that has degraded, turned black or picked up metal particles may seem fine for a short while, but the fault will inevitably come back. Common causes include topping up refrigerant without ever changing the old oil, fitting a replacement compressor without adding oil of the specified grade, and using compressors of unknown origin whose factory fill volume and grade do not match.
A Three-Minute Sequence for Tracking Down Oil Problems
Step one: feel the low-pressure line. If pressures are normal after topping up but the low-pressure line is only slightly cool rather than properly cold, and vent temperature will not come down to where it should, suspect the oil. Step two: read the compressor's operating current. A current clearly above the specified value points to inadequate internal lubrication and laboured operation, which usually means the oil has degraded or the quantity is wrong. Step three: examine the old oil recovered during evacuation. If it is black, carries particles, or has become tacky and stopped flowing, replace it all without hesitation.
Key Details for Reassembly and Road Testing
Never mix oil grades. Engine-driven compressors and the electric compressors used in new energy vehicles rely on different oil systems, and an electric compressor must have a dedicated oil with insulating properties; one grade off is still wrong. Do not believe the claim that any compressor oil will do, because the jobs that fail are usually the ones that believed it. For fill quantity, the reliable principle is to add the same amount of new oil as was drained from the old compressor. A small tolerance is acceptable and is safer than rigidly following a manual figure. Evacuate for the full specified time, since residual moisture in the lines reacts with the oil and degrades it, planting a long-term fault. After reassembly, road-test to the specified procedure and confirm cooling performance and running condition before handing the vehicle back.
