The advantage of R-1234yf is simple: it lasts only 11 days in the atmosphere, against 13 years for R-134a. For independent shops and technicians the question is not whether they will encounter these systems but when. R-1234yf systems work much like R-134a systems, but refrigerant identification and system charging bring new requirements.

Credits, Mandates and the Transition

R-1234yf began appearing on some models in 2014, with early adoption earning automakers environmental credits. World-platform vehicles sold in North America and Europe then made the switch. By 2023 the vast majority of automakers had converted most of their platforms, and the industry-wide changeover was essentially complete well ahead of the 2021 deadline.

This phased changeover created a new problem for shops: an R-1234yf vehicle can be charged by mistake with R-134a or another blended refrigerant. Although the two refrigerants use different service fittings, contamination of the system is still possible. A technician who does not understand the difference or lacks identification tools can damage recovery and recycling equipment. Even if recovery and charging are outsourced, the shop should still be able to identify R-1234yf, existing refrigerants and contaminants; refrigerant detection tools help diagnose air-conditioning faults on newer vehicles.

Recovery and recycling equipment has improved markedly as well. New machines certified to SAE J2843 are highly automated and need almost no supervision, and some can alert the technician through phone or tablet apps when a job is done or further checks are required.

Technician Training

Technicians are advised to recertify to the SAE J609 technician training and certification standard. That standard has been updated so technicians understand the handling and service requirements of the new refrigerants.

Price Movement

The biggest issue with R-1234yf used to be price. A few years ago, limited production capacity and inventory pushed some dealers' prices to USD 60 to 100 per pound. As aftermarket supply has grown and more producers have entered, prices have fallen substantially, and R-1234yf now generally costs about twice as much as R-134a.

Changes in Compressor Oil

Just as the phase-out of R-12 brought ester and PAG oils into use, the arrival of R-1234yf has brought new compressor oil requirements. Manufacturers now call for more varied and more specific air-conditioning compressor lubricant formulations for the vehicles they build, and the proprietary nature of these products means shops must stock a range of compressor oils to cover the models that come through the door.

For hybrids with electrically driven compressors, polyol ester (POE) oil is not only recommended but in many cases mandatory. Using PAG oil in a hybrid can damage the vehicle and also endanger the technician, because the wrong compressor lubricant carries a risk of electric shock.
