Air-Conditioning Compressor Oils: Types, Uses and Differences
Mineral oil was the mainstream air-conditioning compressor lubricant until the early 1990s, because it was miscible with R-12 refrigerant. Once R-12 was phased out for depleting the ozone layer, mineral oil could not mix with the more environmentally friendly R-134a and went out with it. In 1994 R-134a became the mainstream refrigerant in US mobile air-conditioning systems, and polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil rose alongside it.
